The Graduate Research School (GRS) manages all Master of Research and PhD courses and is currently receiving applications.
Please note that for you to apply to a PHD you need to hold a Master of Research or Master of Philosophy.
For you to apply for a Master of Research or a Master of Philosophy you need to have a research experience during your undergraduate studies.
Admission turnaround time is generally 4-6 weeks, though this can be longer as finding a supervisor and processing approvals can take time.
1. Master of Research at WSU
Duration: 2 years full-time. The course provides a great pathway opportunity to PhD
Fees: $8,000 AUD to $40,000 AUD per year
Supervision: You can submit an application and the GRS will request the schools for supervision, however it will be a speedier process if you search for supervision directly with the Schools themselves.
You will need to submit a 250 word broad statement outlining your research interests.
Entry requirements: Entry is academic merit based and you must have at least a Bachelor level qualification with a 65% credit average. The standard IELTS requirement is – 6.5 overall with no band lower than 6.0.
2. PhD at WSU
Duration: 3 years full-time
Fees: $25,670 AUD to $33,200 AUD per year
Supervision: First of all, you need to find a supervisor, then you will need to contact them directly with a research proposal and a CV.
Entry requirements: Entry is academic merit based and you must have at least a Master level qualification with a minimum 25% research component. It is also beneficial to have previous research output – eg. Published journal articles. The standard IELTS requirement is – 6.5 overall with no band lower than 6.0.
3. Find a Supervisor
Master of Research, Master of Philosophy, Doctor of Philosophy and other research degree applicants are required to discuss their proposed research project with a suitable research supervisor prior to submitting an application.
To find a supervisor who matches your research interests, you should
- Visit the School or Institute research pages and look for researchers in your area of interest. or,
- Search the Staff Profiles Directory.
If you identify a potential supervisor, you should send them an email introducing yourself, describing your previous qualifications and experience, outlining your area of interest, and providing a short explanation about why you would like to work with them on a research project.
